Trip Planner Tips - Clarifying Locations

Sometimes you must clarify a location you have entered. This section shows you how to use the Clarify Location page. Here is what the page looks like:

Clarify locations page example

  1. Shows what you entered in bold italics and directs you to the list of possible matches. If you see what needs to be corrected in your entry, you can use your browser's Back button or the Revise Original Entries link to return to the entry form and change it. Revise Original Entries goes directly back to the entry form and preserves what you have entered and clarified so far.
  2. The list of possible matches. If you see the one you mean, select it. If there are many options, be sure to scroll down using the bar on the right. Tip: If there are dozens of options, check what you entered for one of the conditions described at the bottom of this page.
  3. The Resubmit button. If you've selected one of the options, click the button. Otherwise, try one of the choices below.
  4. Revise Original Entries - another way to go back to the entry form and make a correction. Revise Original Entries goes directly back to the entry form and preserves what you have entered and clarified so far.
  5. Link to the Tips about entering locations - if you haven't found a match among the options, follow the link to the Tips for more help. See below for some common conditions.
  6. Send Feedback - use this link to report missing addresses, ask us to add a landmark, receive assistance with a particular location, or comment on the Trip Planner. When you send the form from this link it tells us what location you entered.

The Clarify Location page comes up for several reasons. These common conditions can be corrected as indicated:

A street name is misspelled

Check the spelling if you can and correct it. If the Trip Planner spells a street name wrong, use the feedback form to report it.

House numbers on a street don't include the one you entered

Select the closest range of addresses possible. If none are close at all, check a map to find the nearest intersections and try them instead.

A landmark isn't in the database

Only certain types of landmarks are available. If you think the Trip Planner is missing one of those, you can suggest we add it using the feedback form. Meanwhile, substitute the address, a nearby intersection, or a different nearby landmark.

Confusing punctuation

It's best to remove all punctuation.

The location is not in the area covered

See the description of our coverage area.

Too much information has been entered

It's easy to include too much detail, especially if you paste a location into the Trip Planner. You can safely trim out everything but the basics. For example, from "1234 Jones Avenue North Suite 3A, Seattle, WA, 98111" you can eliminate everything except "1234 Jones." From "International Blvd (State Highway 99) & South 188th Street" you can remove everything except "International & 188." For more on this, see the Tips.
