Trip Planner Tips - Messages

At times, the Trip Planner will return a message instead of the information you requested. This section describes the most common messages and what they mean.

Some of the messages indicate that transit service is not available near a location or at the time you requested. There may still be alternatives that the Trip Planner can't give you. Read more about those alternatives.

If you receive a message that does not seem correct, you can report it using the 'Comments' function at the top or bottom of each Trip Planner page or the 'Feedback' link on some pages.

Dates - too far in the past or in the future
The Trip Planner does not keep information for dates more than a few days in the past. If you see an error message about a date too far in the past, you can revise your entry to a more current date.

For future dates, the Trip Planner notifies you that information might not be reliable for dates over 100 days in the future, and will not offer information for more than six months in the future. Transit service undergoes major revision three times each year. These revisions, called Service Changes, can include cancellations of routes, new routes, and different schedules and stops for routes. If you see a message about a future date, you can enter a more current date or try your query again closer to when you wish to travel.

No query data
The Trip Planner pages that give answers for information you specified in one of the entry forms are generated at the time you submit your request. Since they are not permanent pages, you can't add them to your favorites or make them a bookmark. If you want to keep the information, you can make a note of it. In addition, most internet browsers let you save or print the page. Alternatively you can select the information on the page, copy it, and paste it into a document in a word processor, text editor, or other application.

No service at origin (or destination) at the date/time specified
Transit service may not be available at the time you requested. There may be service at a different time of day or a different day of the week, or at a location nearer a more populated area of the county. One of the alternatives to transit may be available. Or you may have entered a date too far in the future. Transit service information changes three times a year, in early February, Mid-June and late September. New information is not available in the trip planner until one or two weeks before the change. You get this message if you entered a date that is after a service change date and before the information is available.

No stops within walking distance
There are no bus stops within the walking distance set in the query form. You can use your browser's Back button to change the walking distance in your request, but for some locations, there are no stops within the maximum walking distance of one mile. There are several solutions:

  • You can enter the location in the "Find Stops" query. It returns stops even if they are more than a mile from the location, and you can click on the stop name to find what routes serve it.
  • You can enter a different location (for instance, the location of a stop you found using "Find Stops") and try again.
  • You can see if one of the alternatives to transit works for you.
  • You can check on routes that serve a wider area. See Who's Who for the Transit agencies available in the Trip Planner and go to the web site of the appropriate agency to look for routes or locations you can use.

No times available
Bus service is not available at the time you requested. There may be service at a different time of day or a different day of the week, or at a location nearer a population center. Also check the available alternatives to transit.

Start and end locations are too near each other for transit to be of use.
This message is displayed when the starting location and the ending location are within about 1000 feet of each other. Even when transit service is available, it is often easier to proceed to the ending location without using it.

The Trip Planner system is currently being updated.
This message means the Trip Planner is receiving new data, or other housekeeping is going on. These processes are usually scheduled for early mornings and last no more than 30 minutes. Please try your request again, allowing time for the update to be completed.

Trip not possible
More than one factor has caused the trip planner not to be able to respond. You may get better results by checking your entry for one of the conditions described above and making adjustments as noted, or there may be a suitable alternative to transit. Note: you may get this message when you are using the Schedule portion of the trip planner and not actually planning a trip.

Walking distance exceeds one mile or is not safe
This message usually comes from a Find Stops query for one of two reasons:

  • The distance shown is "as the crow flies" but the actual walking path is over one mile in length.
  • Walking would require travel on a street that is not safe for walking, such as a freeway.

You can sometimes use a stop as a starting or ending location in the Trip Planner and plan to walk over one mile in order to reach the stop or your destination. More about using a stop as a starting or ending location.
